ECHR: Romanian state is to pay 15,000 euros to 17 Romanian citizens, victims of the December 1989 Revolution

President of the "December 21" Association Teodor Maries on Tuesday called on Romanian courts to observe the rulings handed down by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

"Today we had ECHR had down a new ruling. I think it's high time for the Romanian authorities to start doing justice to the victims of the December 1989 Revolution (...) Comply with the rulings of the European Court, just that, nothing more!" Maries said during a press conference, in a message addressed to the Romanian judicial authorities.

Pointing the finger at the case prosecutors, Maries said they abusively closed the Revolution cases and accused them of following orders aimed at concealing the true facts.

The European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday ruled that the Romanian state is to pay 15,000 euros in compensation to each of the 17 Romanian citizens who complained in the court in Strasbourg against the absence of an effective investigation into the violent suppression of anti-communist manifestations that took place in December 1989 in Bucharest and Resita and during which relatives of theirs were killed, shows a release on the ECHR website.
