EPP supports Codruta Kovesi’s bid for the European Prosecutor’s Office top position
Vice- President of the European People's Party (EPP), the largest political group in the European Parliament, Esteban Gonzalez Pons says his party is endorsing and will vote Laura Codruta Kovesi, the former Romanian anti-corruption head, for the helm of the European Prosecutor’s Office, a body that is to be operational as of 2020.
„To be brief, we support her. I think the politics should stay away from the elections of the European chief prosecutor. Therefore, only considering her technical capacity, we endorse her,” Pons told HotNews quoted by romaniajournal.ro.
The former head of the Romanian National Anti-corruption Directorate, Laura Codruta Kovesi is the favoritefor the position of the European Public Prosecutor, ranking first in the selection panel organised by the expert committee after the interview tow weeks ago. Kovesi outranks the other two candidates from Germany and France.
After the ruling coalition from Bucharest had lashed out against Kovesi, with the Justice minister Tudorel Toader announcing they will not back up the former DNA head for this candidature, more European leaders rushed to voice their endorsement for Kovesi.
Last Friday, Josef Moser, the Austrian minister of Justice, while attending the JHA Council, announced that Austria will vote Codruta Kovesi for the helm of the European Prosecutor’s Office.
This was after, the previous day, Gunther Krichbaum himself, the chair of the committee for European Affairs in the German Bundestag, had voiced support for the ex-DNA chief prosecutor.
