EU Commissioner : Calafat-Vidin bridge project, an example of cooperation under Danube Strategy

European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said on Thursday that the project of the road and railway bridge linking Calafat (southern Romania) and Vidin (Bulgaria) can be an example of cooperation between two states under the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, also under consideration of the implementation of the next EU financial perspective (2013-2020).

Hahn answered a question on how the EU Strategy for the Danube Region can encourage projects like that of the Calafat-Vidin bridge (which is completed to an extent of 55 pct), given that some of the major problems and delays arisen during the works on the project were many a time related to the transport infrastructure.

According to Agerpres correspondent, the construction of two Danube bridges between Romania and Bulgaria, one of which is that linking Calafat and Vidin (a component of Pan-European Transport Corridor IV), is one of the examples cited in the EC proposal presented on Thursday in connection with the EU Strategy for the Danube Region as having a contribution to the accomplishment of the broader goals of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

The European Commission presented on Thursday the proposal on the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. The participating countries are those subject to the Danube Cooperation Process (eight of which are EU members): Germany (especially the states Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria), Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania (all EU members), plus Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Moldova and Ukraine.
