Eurobarometer:Two out of three Romanians – optimistic about the EU future
The values that define best the European Union are the human rights (34% Romania, 33% the EU), democracy (32% Romania, 33% the EU) and peace (32% Romania, 40% the EU) – these are just a few of the conclusions drawn by the national report on Romania, part of the Standard Eurobarometer 88 survey, stiri.tvr,ro informs.
“Romanians continue to believe in Europe and in the values it promotes. We need their confidence and dynamism in view of building the future European Union, its basis will be set at the summit in Sibiu, in 2019, during the Romanian presidency of the EU Council,” Angela Cristea, head of the EC representation in Bucharest has said on Monday about the release.
More than half of Romanians have confidence in the European Parliament (56% against the European average of 45%) and in the European Commission (50% against the European average of 42%). On the other hand, the confidence in national institutions is lower, e.g. only 21% of Romanians have confidence in the Government.
Regarding the next year, 35% of Romanians say the economic situation will worsen, with the Greeks ahead of them (48%), Croats and British (39%). About the EU’s economic situation, one of two Romanian citizens, similarly to the EU average, say it is rather good and very good.
In regard to the future, 47% of Romanians believe the European Union is heading in the right direction, a share above the European average by 17 percentage points. Regarding Romania, 64% of Romanian respondents say the country is heading in a wrong direction, the European average being of 49%.
The surveys of Standard Euroberometer type are released twice a year, in summer and winter, since 1974. The winter one includes the release of a national report for each of the Member States, in the quarter following the general figures, with analysis on the citizens’ perceptions in each country.
The data for Standard Eurobarometer 88 were collected in Romania during November 5-12, 2017. The representative sample was made of 1,062 people aged above 15. The data collection was done by face-to-face interviews.
