Eurostat: the number of employees in the industry of wood manufacture in Romania grew by 17% in the last seven years
The sector of wood manufacture in Romania with the exception of the production of furniture, had 80,300 employees at the end of last year up by 16.7% against 2010, according to the European office of statistics Eurostat, which shows that Romania is the only country out of the big ten European producers with constant growth of employment in the sector over the last six years.
The whole sector of wood in Romania has approximately 230,000 employees at present.
In the sector of wood manufacture, Romania was last year the fourth employer in the EU after Poland (164,400 employees) Germany (109,800) and Italy (107,000).
The forested surface of Romania grew last year by 5,508 ha, or 0.08% against the previous year up to 6,404 million ha, show the data of the INS while the quantity of timber dropped by 935,600 cubic metres or 5.2% against 2015.
According to the data of the players on the market, the owners and the administrators of woods in Romania sold in 2016 almost 18 million cubic metres of timber to the processors, out of which the state company Romsilva has a share of over 50% with over 9 million cubic metres.
The exploitation of wood in Romania reduced significantly after 1989 as a result of the decline of some industries which use timber.
Between 1965 and the end of the communist era, Romania exploited annually almost 25 million cubic metres of timber from the woods of the country, the official statistics show, the level being considered sufficient by the specialists to allow the regeneration of the woods.
However, timber cutting were made in an less organised way after 1989, especially in the woods given back to private owners, the specialists say.
