Birth rate, death rate and natural increase1 The births of 16053 children were recorded in May 2017, 3600 more than in April 2017. The number of persons whose deaths were recorded in May 2017 was 20724, 105 less than in April 2017. The natural increase in May 2017 was negative, with an excess of deaths of 4671 over live births. The number of deaths of children under 1 year recorded in May 2017 was 123, an increase of 15 compared to April 2017.
Marriage rate and divorce rate
12268 marriages were recorded at Register Offices in May 2017, 2531 more than in April 2017. 2693 divorces were formally pronounced by final court decree and in accordance with Law No 202/2010, 87 more than in April 2017.

The number of live births rose by 604 in May 2017 compared to the same month of 2016, and the number of persons who died was smaller by 522 than in May 2016. The natural increase was negative both in May 2017 (-4671 persons) and in May 2016 (-5797 persons). The number of children under 1 year who died in May 2017 was lower by 8 than the one recorded in May 2016.
Marriage rate and divorce rate
The number of marriages decreased by 350 in May 2017 compared to the same month of the previous year. In May 2017, 14 less divorces than in May 2016 were formally pronounced by final court decree and in accordance with Law No 202/2010.
