Foreign Ministry completely disapproves Russia's move to annex Crimea
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) expresses its complete disapproval of the annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and of the city of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation, reads a release sent on Tuesday.
According to the document, 'this act is illegitimate, and it contravenes the fundamental principles of international law'; it especially breaches the independence, sovereignty and the territorial integrity of neighbouring Ukraine.
'By acting this way, the Russian Federation unfortunately seems to choose international isolation from the political, economic and military points of view, instead of dialogue and cooperation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs unequivocally states that, together with its European and Euro-Atlantic partners, Romania will not recognize the act of annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, an integral part of the Ukrainian state. MAE considers that the reality which some try to build unilaterally today, violating the international law, is deeply worrisome and dangerous, as it can generate unsettling effects in the whole region,' the release adds.
MAE considers that annexing a region which is a part of an independent and sovereign state is an unprecedented breaching of international law, of all the norms and principles ruling today in the community of democratic states; today, the results of decades of dialogue and cooperation aiming to forge a united Europe, without division lines, as drafted in the Helsinki Final Act and in the Charter of Paris for a New Europe, are erased.
'The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its concern about the risk that today's unilateral decision of the Russian Federation to change international borders stimulates the prolonged conflicts in neighbouring areas of Romania, and implicitly of the European Union and of the North Atlantic Alliance; it threatens to negatively impact the stability and security in the European space. Consistent in this approach, Romania has permanently supported on principle the settling of all these conflicts, without differentiations, based on the same parameters, namely the respect for the norms and principles of international law, for the state's sovereignty and territorial integrity, within their internationally recognized borders, and through negotiations carried out in good faith and in an inclusive format,' the press release also mentions.
MAE thinks that the respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states that have prolonged conflicts on their territories, like the Republic of Moldova, within its internationally recognized border, must be reconfirmed unequivocally by all the international partners, in a public manner, by discouraging the secessionist tendencies and especially through concrete actions.
'To this effect, as a proof of concrete support, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms the vital necessity of the earliest possible signing of the Association Agreement and of the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union by the Republic of Moldova and by Georgia,' the document also points out.
