Foreign Ministry welcomes first EU sanction list for actions destabilizing Moldova

The EU General Affairs Council adopted on Tuesday the first group of five people sanctioned based on the new EU sanction regime to counteract actions destabilzing Moldova. The group includes Ilan Sor and Vladimir Plahotniuc.

 

The Foreign Ministry welcomes the adoption of the first list of people sanctioned, according to the EU sanction regime, to counteract actions meant to destabilize Moldova, made upon the suggestion of the Romanian foreign minister Bogdan Aurescu.

 

Romania obtained the political accord of all member states at the Foreign Affairs Council, on April 24, 2023.

 

The approval of lists is an important step in sanctioning people responsible with destabilizing actions, the decision being very importat in the present regional context marked by consequences of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, by hybrid, ample and sustained pressures against Moldova, which include interference in domestic political processes and attempts to undermine constitutional order. Romania remains a firm supporter of Moldova's European journey and we continue to actively back its firm and irreversible anchoring in values of democracy and rule of law,” said minister Aurescu, according to the Foreign Ministry.

 

The sanction regime regulates the following types of measures:

  • freezing economic funds and resources

  • travelling interdictions.

 

The following persons were listed based on the sanctions regime in Moldova:

  1. Ilan Sor: president of Sor Party and businessman involved in the illegal financing of political parties in Moldova, inciting to violence against democratic opposition and intimidating state authorities, as well as organizing training camps for people in order to provoke violent actions during street protests in Moldova.

  2. Igor Chaika: Russian businessman with influence on the political spectrum in Chisinau involved in channelling money towards the active stock of Russian secret services in Moldova in roder to facilitate actions meant to destabilize Moldova.

  3. Gheorghe Cavaliuc, former president of Home We Build Europe Party, is responsible for destibilizng documents, involvement in recent violent protests in Moldova. At the same time, he is involved in attempts to overthrow the democratically elected government by setting up a shadow government.

  4. Marina Tauber: Vicepresident of Sor Party and Ilan Sor's right hand, has significantly contributed to violent protests, while being one of the main organizers. Disregarding measures adopted by the Anticorruption Prosecution Tauber used secial communication devices to sned direct instructions on recruting, transporting and paying protesters.

  5. Vladimit Plahotniuc: former president of the Democratic Party of Moldova, was subject to many penal procedures for embezzling state funds and illegally transferring them abroad. Even whenhe no longer held any state positions, Plahotniuc continued to negatively influence Moldova's policy.

     

     

    Based on sanctions about Ukraine and foractions with destabilizing effects in Moldova:

    1. Aleksandr Kalinin: leader of Region Party in Moldova constantly backed actions threatening Uktaine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence by supporting Russian military forces and promoting invasion symbols; 2. Grigore Caramalac: president of IFAVIS Foundation, accused of organizing, through the foundations he created, patriotic events in occupied territories in eastern Ukraine with Russian support.
