Guy Verhofstadt: „ We expect ALDE group formally expel ALDE Romania from our movement, as soon as possible”
The adoption of amendments to the Criminal Codes by the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday has stirred reactions from European liberals and not only.
The leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) has urged urgent measures to exclude Calin Popescu Tariceanu’s party ALDE 9 minor at rule) from the European party, after he previously requested the exclusion, realitatea.net reports.
„Sadly, the situation in Romania keeps regressing. The @ALDEGroup decided in early April to exclude ALDE Romania. We expect the @ALDEParty to follow this decision and formally expel them from our movement, as soon as possible”, Guy Verhofstadt wrote on Twitter.
Gunther Krichbaum, chairman of the European Affairs Committee with the German Bundestag, has sent a letter to European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker requesting the triggering of article 7 against Romania.
The lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies voted on Wednesday the controversial amendments to the Criminal Codes, adopted earlier on Tuesday by the legal committee headed by Florin Iordache. The vote in favour of the amendments was given by MPs from PSD, ALDE, UDMR and former social-democrats that left the party for Victor Ponta’s party Pro Romania.
The European Commission has also reacted after the Chamber of Deputies adopted on Wednesday the amendments to the Criminal Codes and a spokesman said that the amendments to the Criminal Codes will be analysed and the Commission will have to react quickly and use the means at its disposal.
