In the first quarter of 2018, the economically active population of Romania was 8891 thousand persons, out of which 8477 thousand were employed persons and 414 thousand unemployed persons.
The employment rate of the working age population (15-64 years) accounted for 63.1 per cent in the first quarter of this year, down 0.3 per cent from the previous quarter, with the unemployment rate standing at 4.7 per cent, the same as in the previous quarter, according to data released on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Romania's active population counted 8.891 million, out of which 8.477 million were employed and 414,000 were unemployed.
Between January and March 2018, the employment rate of the 20-64 age segment accounted for 68 per cent, by 2 percentage points below the national target of 70 per cent, established under the Europe 2020 Strategy.
According to the INS, the employment rate was higher in men (71 per cent compared with 54.9 per cent in women) and in urban areas (64.9 per cent versus 60.7 per cent in rural areas). The employment rate of young people (15-24 years old) was 23.4 per cent.
As far as the unemployment rate is concerned, by gender, the difference between men and women in terms of unemployment was of 1.5 percentage points (5.3 per cent for men compared with 3.8 per cent for women), and by residential areas of 1.2 percentage points (5.3 per cent for rural areas, compared with 4.1 per cent for urban areas).
By age group, the unemployment rate reached the highest level (16.8 per cent) among the young people (15-24 years old).
