Iohannis, in Brussels: I will insist on urgency of military support for Ukraine
President Klaus Iohannis declared, on Thursday, before participating in the European Council in Brussels, that he will insist, at this summit, on the "urgency" of providing military support to Ukraine.
"I will insist on the urgency of military support and the need to fulfill the commitments we have assumed," said Iohannis.
The president recalled that Romania supports the neighboring country militarily, as well as in a humanitarian manner and in terms of grain transit.
Iohannis also pointed out that "the Republic of Moldova is the most affected state by Russia's aggression, after Ukraine".
At the same time, he conveyed that he will emphasize, at the Council, the importance of the Black Sea region from a security point of view.
Romania will not communicate exactly the direct military support it gives to Ukraine, because our country is "near the front," President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday, before participating in the European Council meeting.
"Romania will not be more transparent. (...) It simply does not seem useful to me to make public details about the military aid or about where we train Ukrainian military. We are near the front. There is no point in giving data through the media to those who are aggressing Ukraine," said the head of state.
These measures, he emphasised, "are approved by the competent fora and managed with great responsibility."
He mentioned the Fetesti centre, where training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 aircraft is planned.
On Monday, the joint bureaus of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate took note of a letter from the President Klaus Iohannis in which he informed Parliament that he approved the transit of some equipment and material goods donated by Finland to Ukraine and the training of approximately 50 Ukrainian military.
Iohannis: I will highlight Romania's substantial contribution to the protection of the external border
President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday that at the European Council meeting he will highlight "Romania's substantial contribution to the protection of the external border."
"We will have a discussion on the progress made in the migration area. I will highlight, once again, Romania's substantial contribution to the protection of the European Union's external border. At the same time, I will underline that Romania is continuing its efforts to complete the process of joining the Schengen area, by lifting land border controls as soon as possible," said the head of state.
As of 31 March, Romania and Bulgaria will be part of the Schengen area with air and sea borders respectively.
