Iohannis-Merkel telephone conversation on COVID-19 pandemic development and EU budget

President Klaus Iohannis had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, at the latter's request, the Presidential Administration informed.

Chancellor Merkel send condolences to President Iohannis for the victims of the fire at the ICU of the Neamt County Hospital and voiced hope that the injured would recover shortly.

The two officials discussed the developments in the two countries and the measures taken in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. President Iohannis highlighted that the virus spread in the European Union remains concerning, thus coordination and cooperation among member states needing consolidation.

Furthermore, they also talked about the negotiations on the 2021-2027 multiannual budget of the European Union, as well as the European economic recovery plan.

"President Klaus Iohannis pointed out that Romania has constantly supported the need for a fast conclusion of these negotiations. For this reason, the Romanian side has proven a constructive and responsible approach, agreeing with the compromise proposals negotiated by the German Presidency of the EU Council with the European Parliament. Romania's President underscored that Romania has endorsed since the beginning the establishment of a conditionality on the observance of the rule of law principles in the management of the EU budget and, consequently, it backs the agreement obtained by the German Presidency in this file," the Presidential Administration shows.

The conversation between the two officials took place in view of preparing the meeting on Thursday evening of European Council members, in videoconference format, devoted to aspects related to the COVID-19 management.
