Iohannis met Donald Tusk at Cotroceni Palace: Romania does not accept proposals that lead to a multi-speed Europe
President Klaus Iohannis welcomed President of the European Council Donald Tusk at Cotroceni Palace on Friday, saying that Romania does not accept proposals that lead to a multi-speed Europe.
According to a press statement from the Presidential Administration, Tusk is in a process of consultation with the members of the European Council in order to prepare a roadmap for the steps to be taken in the EU consolidation process, to be discussed at future meetings.
"During the talks, President Klaus Iohannis strongly reiterated Romania's position of not accepting proposals that lead to a two-, or multi-speed or a Europe of concentric circles. Such options would only deepen divisions among the member states," reads the presidential statement.
Iohannis added that the principle of inclusiveness must play a key role in the process of strengthening the European Union.
"Moving forward in a formula of unity and cohesion, without fragmentation among member states, must be the main objective at European level."
Iohannis also urged to a united, strong, cohesive and coherent Europe, closer to its citizens, and heavily profiled in the world.
"This will define the action of Romania when holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2019."
Also discussed were preparations for the European summit to be hosted by the Romanian central city of Sibiu in 2019.
This week, 19 and 20 October, President Klaus Iohannis will participate in Brussels in the European Council meeting which has on the agenda topics such as: migration, digital Europe, security and defence matters, EU foreign relations, with a focus on the relation between the Union and Turkey, according to Dobrovolschi.
