Iohnnis: The Black Sea should become a zone of strategic importance
The Black Sea should become a zone of strategic importance, Romania's President Klaus Iohannis said Friday in Munich.
"Since I am here in Munich to attend the Security Conference, I presented our approach that I will also mention in my speech to the Security Conference that the Eastern flank is important to NATO, an area where Romania is playing an important part and wants to play an important role in providing security for the zone. I also warned about the importance of the Black Sea and the Black Sea zone, which is not important to Romania only, but which should be of importance to the entire region and NATO, and that it should become a zone of strategic importance," Iohannis told a joint news conference with Premier of the Bavarian land Horst Seehofer, after a one-to-one meeting with him.
He added that a very tough issue he discussed with the Bavarian official is the ongoing migration crisis, which he says strikes Bavaria more that it does Romania.
"I reiterated on the same occasion our opinion that Romania wants to display solidarity, to be part of the solution and it does not want to complicate things. On the other hand, I reiterated that the consolidation of the EU's external borders is very important and that the existing migration flow should be better regulated," said Iohannis.
Iohannis started a working visit to Germany on Wednesday. On Thursday, he met Chair of the Bavarian Parliament Barbara Stamm. Starting Friday, he will be attending the Munich Security Conference, where he will be the keynote speaker of a panel on NATO's future.
