Japanese ambassador emphasizes Romania's contribution to security milieu in Ukraine, R. of Moldova, Black Sea region

Romania has facilitated the transport of Ukrainian grain and makes an essential contribution to the security milieu in Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and the Black Sea region, Japanese ambassador in Bucharest Takashi Katae declared on Monday as he hosted a reception organized on the occasion of Japan's National Day, which coincides with Emperor Naruhito's birthday.

In the speech given on this occasion, the Japanese diplomat referenced the war in Ukraine and Russia's brutal violation of the rules-based international order.

Human dignity is threatened, said the ambassador, adding that his country is open to defense cooperation with Romania.

Takashi Katae also spoke about the cooperation of the two countries in the field of infrastructure, mentioning the project for Metro Mainline 6 and bringing to mind that last year the Braila suspension bridge was commissioned, a construction that symbolizes not just a bridge between the two countries, created with cutting-edge Japanese technology, but also Japan-EU cooperation. The diplomat added that this bridge ensures connectivity not only within Romania, but also with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

Attending the event, Senate President Nicolae Ciuca declared that "for Romania, Japan represents a formidable economy, an ancient and impressive culture and a country that we are happy to call our friend."

Ciuca voiced appreciation for Japan's response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "It has proven that it is a dedicated partner in the rules-based international system and that it is determined to continue contributing to global peace and security," said the Senate head.

Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja referred in his intervention to relevant cooperation plans with Japan. "The nuclear power program is fundamental, and Japan has a long tradition and extraordinary results, from large nuclear power plants to small modular reactors," he said.

Culture Minister Raluca Turcan emphasized that "Romania and Japan are linked by strong values, mutual respect, friendship and shared interests that concern the international agenda." The minister also said that works on the Japanese Tea Room at the National Art Museum in Bucharest will be completed this September.
