JusMin Predoiu met British ambassador Noble to discuss combat of human trafficking

Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu and British Ambassador Andrew Noble met on Tuesday to discuss combating human trafficking as well as aspects related to bilateral judicial cooperation and the UK's joining the Lugano Convention.

"The gravity of human trafficking and the disappearance of persons require concerted and vigorous action by all law enforcement institutions in Romania. Combating this phenomenon until it gradually disappears must be a priority for the entire system of defense and law enforcement," Catalin Predoiu pointed out at the end of the meeting, the Justice Ministry said in a release.

He gave assurances that the Justice Ministry is working on a public policy document on this issue, which aims to identify legislative and institutional solutions to more effectively hold accountable those who commit such crimes.

"This phenomenon should not be approached routinely, but in the logic of an exhaustive, continuous and energetic fight, until it remains just a memory, the criminals are put behind bars and the victims are recovered for a normal life. Those tasked with proceeding to the fast tracking down, investigation, indictment, prosecution and conviction - when evidence is available - of those who commit such crimes should permanently bear in mind the unacceptable and shameful disaster in the Tandarei case. I hope that all those who show a special concern for the rights of criminals show the same care for the rights of the victims of human trafficking, including when they legislate in the field of criminal law. We benefit from international cooperation with European states in this field too. It depends only on us to succeed," said Minister Predoiu.
