MEP Vlad Gheorghe: EP vote on new resolution regarding Romania's accession to Schengen to be in July

The vote in the plenary session of the European Parliament on the resolution based on the petition submitted by the civil society in Romania demanding to challenge the legality of Austria's veto against Romania's accession to the Schengen area will take place certainly in the July session in Strasbourg, MEP Vlad Gheorghe announced on Thursday in social media.

MEP Vlad Gheorghe, co-rapporteur for the resolution, says that the final text will contain all the points of interest for Romania, including the request for a new vote for accession by the end of this year, which should be strictly based on the criteria necessary for this step.

"We say clearly that the decision to leave Romania and Bulgaria outside Schengen is a discriminatory one for Romanians and Bulgarians, even more so for those from the diaspora who lose time and money when they return to the country" and "we request financial compensation for all costs caused by non-adherence, despite the fulfillment of the conditions since 2011," the USR MEP also mentions about the content of the resolution.

He voiced conviction that the resolution that will be adopted in the EP with a cross-party majority will represent an additional pressure in favor of Romania.

"All European parliamentary groups, all European political families support the resolution, because the form we negotiated is the best possible, correct from the point of view of EU legislation and jurisprudence. It is gratifying that the Romanian MEPs worked together on this subject, we all understood that it is a priority for our country and we managed to put aside any party, individual or group interest in order to have this resolution, so that it could be voted without emotions (...),', he added.

Vlad Gheorghe also posted on Facebook that all those who criticize this approach, saying that it does not solve anything, must ask themselves what other approach the officials are taking "that should have ensured that Romanians are no longer stuck in customs and are no longer humiliated in queues through Europe".
