Movement for Moldova’s Development launched

The members of the civil society launched on Monday the association Movement for Moldova’s Development (MDM), which already has branches in all 8 counties in Moldova and is meant to promote regional interests in the national agenda.

“Moldova’s situation is dramatic and immediate actions must be taken, without which things can generate dangers hard to anticipate,” the members of the Movement wrote on Facebook. They also published a manifesto in which they explain the launch and announce their objectives.

“Today’s Moldova is economically underdeveloped and without political voice because it is represented by mediocre and obedient politicians, who have never showed solidarity to defend the interests of four million electors. Politicians who vote according to the line of the centralist party and not to the electors’ needs and interests. Every year means another a state budget in which Moldova is not allocated money for the roads it needs, for hospitals, for schools where their children should be educated. Moldova needs a clear, articulate voice, which should protect them and promote their interests. Moldova’s problems have the right to be included on the national agenda. The 8 counties of Moldova have specific problems concerning geography, infrastructure, social dynamics, the conscious protection of a healthy future,” MDM representatives wrote in the manifesto.

Last year, Moldova, which means 20% of the country’s area, received 2.3% of the national budget for investments of the Transport Ministry.

“The labour force migration phenomenon, which draws back the whole national economy, has devastating effects in Moldova: one out of three Romanian emigrants is from Moldova; 25% of the population in the area contributes to other countries’ GDP with their work, compared to 10% the national average. Big cities or whole counties, such as Galati and Botosani, are condemned to isolation and accelerated decline because they cannot connect their economic engines to those of the region because there are no adequate transport connections and regional policies to turn to account resources, creativity, potential,” MDM representatives mentioned among the main problems of the region.

The founding members of MDM include founders of civic associations from Iasi who promote the construction of Iasi-Targu Mures highway. Moreover, they say they do not intend to become a political party.

In exchange, the members support the regionalization process because a region like Moldova can attract more European funds. Its members intend to suggest a national administrative decentralisation model to put together regional interests and national development objectives.
