S&D 's Udo Bullmann after Romanian premier’s speech: There is no ground to set up AMNESTY
Udo Bullmann, a member of the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, declared on Tuesday, in the EP plenum, where Viorica Dancila was present, the fact that the rule of law cannot be manipulated and there is no ground to set up amnesty.
“We evaluate positively your engagement for Romania’s accession to EU. As a former European MP I think you have this experience. I listened with great interest to what you said and you are right that social cohesion represents an important element. We have seen of late the situation in London and how much must be done, regardless of the decision to be made tonight. I want to praise you, as I appreciate you. We must decisively fight corruption. If there is a country where services influence justice, it is a situation we cannot accept,” Bullman said.
He added that the rule of law cannot be manipulated to serve political interests and reform is important, but there is no ground to set up amnesty.
“There are people who suffered unjustly, but there is no ground to set up amnesty. The rule of law is an achievement of the European society that protects people who guarantee the people’s liberties and puts an end to the arbitrary. We, as social-democrats know that thing. The rule of law cannot be manipulated to serve political interests. Your wish for reform can be an excellent premise for a very good cooperation, but I want to say that if these days when university are closed again, if there is no respect for the journalists’ freedom, then Mr Orban must get back,” Bullmann said.
