Olimpia Melinte wins Goya Award nomination for acting performance in 'Cannibal'
Romanian actress Olimpia Melinte was nominated for the prestigious Goya Awards, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars, in the 'Female revelation of the year / Mejor actriz revelación' category for her dual role in the nerve-tingling film 'Cannibal' directed by Spain's Manuel Martín Cuenca, informs a release.
The ceremony will take place this year on February 9 at the Hotel Auditorium in Madrid.
Manuel Martín Cuenca's film has been nominated by the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences of Spain in 8 categories, including 'Best Film', 'Best Director' and 'Female revelation of the year.'
Nominated alongside Olimpia Melinte in the same category are three Spanish actresses: Belén López, María Morales and Natalia Molina.
International media had anticipated Melinte's nomination for the awards of the Spanish film industry, as she was considered not only Manuel Martín Cuenca's most important discovery for his films but also the most inspired casting decision.
'I was highly pleased by news of the nomination, the more so as I know how hard it is to come from another country and work yourself towards being accepted in a foreign film industry so strong as the Spanish one. I loved my double role and I worked very well with the Spanish team,' said Olimpia Melinte.
For this film, the 27-year old actress learned Spanish, took massage courses and had to gain 10 kg in weight.
Olimpia Melinte was born in Iasi on November 7, 1986. She made her debut on the big screen in 2009, in 'Floating Things' directed by Mircea Daneliuc. Her performance in this film earned her two nominations for the Gopo Awards 2010 for 'Best actress in a leading role' and 'Young Hope.' She then teamed up with director Luiza Parvu for the short film 'Draft 7', which was rewarded with special prizes both in the country and abroad. In 2013 she was selected to play the double role in Manuel Martín Cuenca's 'Cannibal' which was filmed in Granada, and also starred in Luiza Parvu's short fiction 'Start Anew World', which was shot in the USA.
