Ovidiu Dranga: MAE still evaluates carefully situation of Syrian Ambassador to Romania
Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) continues to carefully evaluate the situation of the Syrian Ambassador in Bucharest, said MAE spokesperson Ovidiu Dranga on Thursday.
Inquired whether the Ministry sent again to the Presidency the request to expel the Syrian top diplomat, Dranga said that MAE continues to carefully assess his situation.
'We continue to carefully assess the situation of the Syrian Ambassador to Romania and of the entire diplomatic personnel at the Embassy so as to take the right decision depending on how the events will unfold. The MAE position regarding the status of the Syrian diplomat is under permanent assessment by the MAE leaders and by the competent Romanian authorities,' said the secretary of state, during a conference held at MAE headquarters.
He reasserted that he does not want to close the Romanian Embassy in Damascus.
'Romania does not want to suspend its activity at the Embassy in Damascus, neither does it want to reduce the diplomatic personnel so long as the assistance for its own citizens will call for a diplomatic presence and a consulate in Syria, and the security situation will allow for an efficient action in the spirit of the Romanian citizens,' claimed the MAE official.
Dranga also showed that MAE, through the Romanian Embassy in Damascus, continues its complex action of consular assistance and repatriation of the Romanian citizens who are in Syria, pointing out that the registry recorded 268 Romanian people and their families.
