Popa (BNR): Leu has relative stability

The national currency proves a relative stability because in evolutions of 1 ban, or 1.5 bani the leu marks a slight depreciation, slighter than depreciation in the area, says Cristian Popa, a member in the Administration Board of the National Bank of Romania.

We must say there is a relative stability of the leu:  in evolutions of 1 ban, or 1.5 bani the leu marks a slight depreciation, slighter than depreciation in the area. I always make comparisons with the area, because figures do not lie: in the last two weeks, the Hungarian currency depreciated by 2%, the Polish currency by 1.5%, the leu by 0.27%. In the same two weeks, the euro-dollar pair recorded variations from lowest to highest of about 4 cents, the equivalent o 3.3%, therefore much ampler movements than for the euro-dollar pair. All these evolutions come on the background of  various economic and medical data recently published and of their impact on markets,”said Cristian Popa.

He added that the latest evolutions of the leu must be placed in the global context: there are re-considerations in international currency markets, and they influence both regional and local markets.

The national currency recorded, as of March 3, a depreciation tendency. Then the euro was in transaction for 4.8768 lei, while on March 10, the euro/leu pair reached 4.8863 lei for 1 euro.
