President Iohannis on National Day: We need a new start in politics
The National Day could be, this year, a new start in practices, behavior and mentalities, a new start in our political life, says president Klaus Iohannis on the National Day of Romania."I am aware that it's been a difficult year for everybody, marked even recently by tragic events, which reminded us how many things still do not work, how many serious things we encounter in each system. But, they also brought to surface examples of bravery, commitment and determination, and above all a deep will of change. This will of change should be answered to in the year to come by all of us — politicians, institutions, political parties, civil society, media. We may look at this year's National Day as to a new start, in matter of practices, behaviour and mentalities. Like it or not, politics is the one that gives the steering to a society and which the peoples' interests are expressed by. We need a new beginning in politics," said Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday, at the Cotroceni Palace.
He added that this new beginning in politics doesn't mean "to wipe out all good things that have happened, but to try a renewal of us all — new ideas, new approaches and attitudes, by keeping stability and balance of the Romanian political system."
"2016 could be the year in which we rebuild the citizens' confidence in institutions, in political parties, and also in the peoples who compete in their names," the head of state stressed.
He said that especially this year, he has chosen a less pompous celebration and much more anchored in reality, where honoured are the national symbols, those who serve under the national anthem in the military theatres of operations and where are treasured those who promote and embody values in the Romanian society.
Klaus Iohannis reminded that December 1 is the anniversary of the Great Unification and our celebration of soul.
"December 1 is not only a celebration of the past, but also the opportunity to stronger connect ourselves to the present, to the place we have in Europe and in the world, to be aware of ourselves. Romania is today defining itself more actively and more determined, in a complicate region, in a world in which war and terrorist threat have unfortunately surfaced. Things have changed from 20 years ago or 10 years ago and even from the last year. In uncertain, unpredictable times, Romania offers certainty and predictability — the inside certainty of democracy and the predictability of partnership on the outside," said Iohannis.
"Our country also is today a credible partner for its NATO and EU partners. We have this capacity to provide trust and stability in an area with all kinds of tension and risks," said the head of state.
He also said that in 2018, we shall celebrate the centennial of the Great Unification that will be a good opportunity for a balance sheet for the last 100 years of modernity, yet also for the outlook of the following 100 years.
