President Iohannis: We won't discuss moving Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in the near future
President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday that, in respect to the idea of moving the Romanian Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, he still has the same option, of not doing it until there is a common decision made at the EU level in this regard.
"I did not change my opinion, but I can repeat it, it is still an interesting topic. I have argued from the very beginning that the Embassy of Romania should not be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. I still think the same and I will also explain why: the EU made a decision that the member states shouldn't move their embassies separately but, when the conditions are met, the EU members should take this step together," said Iohannis at the Cotroceni Palace, when he was asked what was his opinion at this moment on the issue of moving the Romanian Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The President also explained the conditions that must be met. "These conditions are quite clear, the status of Jerusalem must be clarified between the two actors who have been engaged in this discussion for many years - it is obviously that both the state of Israel and Palestine claim that their capital should be Jerusalem and things are not clear at all. Therefore, the question of moving the embassy can be addressed to the extent that the first interested parties in the status of Jerusalem reach an agreement and inform us. Which is why we won't discuss in the near future about moving the Embassy," concluded Iohannis.
