PSD's Ciolacu says ready to be president of all Romanians

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the national leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), on Tuesday announced having decided to run for the position of President of Romania.

"I have decided to submit my candidacy for the Romanian Presidency. I made the decision after consulting with the Romanians, my family and my colleagues in the party. At Saturday's Congress convention I will come before the Romanians with my plan for Romania and I will ask my colleagues for their support to win the presidential election," Ciolacu said on Tuesday in a social media post.

He added that Romania needs, "more than ever", stability and balance.

"Romanians need the certainty that by working they can have a better life. The country needs a president who cares about all Romanians.

"I have never backed down from hard things. I took over the presidency of the PSD in a very difficult moment and, together with my colleagues, we managed to regain the trust of the people. I accepted the responsibility of being Prime Minister in one of the most complicated moments in recent history. And I managed, together with my colleagues in the government, to put things in order. I am ready to take now the responsibility of being the president of all Romanians. I have faith that I can contribute to the future of my country - a future of security and well-being. May God help us!"
