Romania and USA, commercial exchanges of 2.6 billion dollars
The overall volume of Romania’s commercial exchanges with the US amounted to 2.67 billion dollars in 2016, according to American statistic data. Of that total, 1.96 billion dollars represented Romanian exports to the US and 714.1 million dollars are imports from the US.
According to centralised data of Romania’s Embassy to Washington, the main categories of products exported by Romania to the US, in the first 6 months of 2017, were computers and electronic products -387.6 million dollars, representing 19.7% of total. They were followed by transport equipment (224.8 million dollars -12.5% of total), machinery, except electric one (204.9 million dollars -10.4% of total) and plastic and rubber products (195.3 million dollars- 10%).
As for Romanian imports from the US in the same period of time, the main groups of products were computers and electronic products (136 million dollars -19.1% of total), followed by machinery, except the electric ones (116.9 million dollars- 1.4%), transport equipment (113.9 million dollars-15.9%) and oil products (62.8 million dollars-8.8% of total).
The most important American companies with direct investments in Romania are - ADM, Aecom, Alcoa, Amgen, Bungee, Cargill, Citibank, Coca Cola, Colgate Palmolive, Cooper Cameron, Delphi Packard, Euro Tire, Eli Lilly, Flextronics, Ford, General Electric, GE Money, Hewlett Packard, Hilton, Hoeganaes, Honeywell, IBM, Johnson Controls, JW Marriott, Kodak, Kraft, Mc Donald’s, Met Life, Microsoft, New Century Holding, Office Depot, Oracle, PepsiCo, Philip Morris, Procter& Gamble, Qualcomm, Raytheon, Romanian-American Enterprise Fund, Sigma Blazer, Smithfield Foods, Timken, UPC, Visa, Washington International Group/URS.
Statistics published by the National Office of Trade Registrar shows that at the end of December 2016, USA ranked 14th in the top of states with foreign investments in Romania (2.06% of total foreign investments).
Sectors in which American investments have the biggest share are auto industry, machine building industry, agriculture and food industry, IT, energy, financial services, electronic industry, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, communications and tourism.
