Romania, Bulgaria and Chile rank last in UNICEF classification for children welfare

Romania, Bulgaria and Chile rank last in a top of progress in industrialised countries for children welfare, where Switzerland, countries in Northern Europe and Germany are first, according to a report presented by UNICEF on Thursday, presented by Swiss radio and television RTS.

These three countries have a per capita incomes inferior to other countries in the industrialized world, according to the report made by the research centre Innocenti of UN Fund for Children.

The low positions of countries like the US (37th of 41) and New Zealand (34th) prove that a big national income is not enough to guarantee good results in children welfare, the authors of the report show.

Slovenia, ranking 9th, exceeds many richer countries for several indicators. France (19th) is among countries with average results.

This classification compares the situation of 41 countries in EU and OCDE. It was made according to 9 criteria, among which objectives of durable development defined by the UN in 2015.

According to the report, one out of five children (21%) in these 41 countries with high incomes lives below the poverty threshold. But there are big differences: one out of 10 children in Denmark, Iceland and Norway are in that situation, while one child out of three is below poverty threshold in Israel and Romania.

One out of 8 children faces food insecurity and the level climbs to one out of five children in UK (13th) and USA and one out of three children in Mexico and Turkey.

Child obesity at ages between 11 and 15 is a form of malnutrition and is rising in most countries.

Most rich countries have reduced newborn death rate but Canada, USA, Chile, Mexico, Bulgaria and Turkey still nave levels over the average of 2.8 deaths per 1,000 births.
