Romania ranks 11th in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and 50th in the world in the prosperity top (Legatum Prosperity Index), Shanker Singham, the director of Economic Policies at Legatum Institute declared on Thursday.
“Romania is 50th in the world. Austria is first among CEE countries. The Prosperity Index measures prosperity by considering nine pillars: business, governing, health system, citizens’ education, etc. Social impact places Romania 97th in the world. The situation has improved a lot, but there is a long way to be crossed in comparison with other countries from Western or Central Europe. The social capital level should be considered with more attention by Romania,” Shanker Singham said.
According to him, in Romania confidence between individuals is less of a problem that the confidence level of individuals in institutions.
People trust institutions very little in Romania. When something like that happens it is very difficult to have good governing and a good ruling system because institutions which should settle the business environment are involved in the process and we see information in the score obtained by government in Romania, Shanker Singham said.
In point of social capital, Romania ranks 97th in the world, on the rise by 31 positions while in point of health it is 85th, dropping by three positions. The highest position is held by the business environment, 41st, dropping by 6 positions.
At CEE level, Romania is 11th, after Hungary and before Macedonia (12th) and Bulgaria (13th).
CEE countries occupy positions between 15 and 74, within Legatum Prosperity Index in the world, the highest position being (15th) being held by Austria and the 74th by Albania.
