Romania can ensure mineral water necessary to the countries in Europe for a period 25 years in a row

Romania can ensure mineral water necessary to the countries in Europe for a period of 25 years in a row, from the point of view of mineral water which exists in our country, of very good quality, stated the general manager of the National Company of Mineral Water (SNAM) Radu Dumitru.

He mentioned that the reserves of mineral water of Romania are very big, as they cover about 60% of the volume of mineral water existing at the level of Europe. Thus, the Romanian state is discussing with an investment fund from Liban which wants to import a large quantity of mineral water, but with other Arabic states which need water, the potential for export being very big.

Romania has a big potential of export. At present there are some companies which bottle mineral water which is exported. The volume for export is about 3-4 % of the sales volume, which would be approximately 2 million cubic metres of water, very little by comparison to what is sold at national level.

The consumption of mineral water in Romania per capital is 50-55 litres per year. In Finland, for example, the consumption is about 20 litres per capita but in Italy it is 200 litres per capita per year. An average at the level of mineral water consumption is 100 – 105 litres per capita. Thus, the consumption in Romania is half by comparison to the average recorded at the level of Europe.

The high cost of mineral water in Romania is one of the reasons for which controlled water is used in reduced quantities.

Radu Dumitru considers that one of the SNAM objectives for this year is that of acquiring their own bottling factory for mineral water, with bank loan or European funds.

At the same time, the head of SNAM showed that the company sells mineral water to bottling companies at about 4 bani/litre and gets to the consumers on the shelf, at about 1.5 lei/litre.

According to him, the high cost of mineral water in Romania is one of the reasons for which controlled water is consumed in reduced quantities.
