Romania, France forge agreement to recognise higher education diplomas

Romanian Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu and French Ambassador to Romania Philippe Gustin on Thursday signed an Agreement by which the higher education diplomas - degree, master's degree, doctor's degree - will be mutually recognised by the two countries after the document is ratified by Parliament.

'Up until now, there have been agreements signed between universities. Now, by this treaty, the recognition becomes valid without the agreement between the universities and the recognition becomes mandatory for either country , for any university, on condition the programme is accredited, is recognised by the state. France receives the highest number of Romanian high education students in all three cycles of studies. We have in Romania most co-tutelage theses coordinated by Romanian and French professors. There also are very many research works on European projects being conducted with the participation of the researchers from Romania and France. There also are MA programmes achieved with French universities, we have many visiting professors', Andronescu said.

She stressed the Education Ministry's intention is to have as many international collaborations and as many foreign students as possible, since their number is also considered in the international rankings.
Andronescu announced there is a large number of French students studying in Romania, most of them attending medicine universities.

Bucharest University Chancellor Mircea Dumitru said the signed accord will smooth the bureaucratic procedures a lot.'When it comes to inter-government agreements, then all the administrative difficulties and formalities are very much smoothed. We should have such bilateral agreements with all the countries in the area and in the European Union', he said.Dumitru announced Bucharest University has a strategy aimed at putting its curricula relating the degree and MA in line with the international standards, by which it seeks to attract students from Asia and Africa.
