Romania has signed Treaty of the High Seas

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminita Odobescu, signed the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, also known as the Treaty of the High Seas, as part of her participation in the high-level segment of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), sent on Thursday, the political significance of the treaty is special, demonstrating the current level of ambition of the international community, the interest in environmental protection and ocean protection.

"The treaty, adopted on June 19, 2023, by consensus, after approximately 20 years of negotiations, applies the Montego Bay Convention on the Law of the Sea and regulates aspects regarding the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas outside national jurisdiction, such as : the conservation of marine genetic resources and the protection of biodiversity, including through the establishment of marine protected areas, the way of carrying out the assessment of the impact on the environment, the way of sharing the benefits, the transfer of technology and the strengthening of the capacities of developing states," states the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
