Romania participates in the Vienna International Book Fair from 8 to 12 November
Romania will take part, between 8th and 12th November, in the International Book Fair in Vienna with their own stand and a diverse programme, the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) said in a statement on Friday.
Romania’s presence in the event, organised by ICR through the National Centre of the Book and ICR Vienna will have as a motto ‘ Romania, another page’ / Rumanien, Eine neue Seite’.
The ICR stand in the fair, the visitors will find a selection of the most recent translations of Romanian titles in German, materials which promote the programmes of the institution, as well as catalogues promoting Romanian literature.
"I am glad that, after returning to the London Book Fair, this year we are also resuming our participation with a book stand and a programme of events at Buch Wien, one of the most important book fairs in Europe. The German-language book market is one of the spaces where, once penetrated by translations, Romanian authors can easily migrate to other linguistic territories. I hope that the resumption of participation in Buch Wien will contribute even more to stimulating translations into German", said Liviu Jicman, President of the Romanian Cultural Institute.
The events programmed will take place both during the fair and in related spaces in the Austrian capital and at the headquarters of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna.
The series of events start on 8th November, at 6 p.m. with a debate attended by three well-known poets: Radu Vancu – chairman of PEN Romania, partner organization of the event, Miruna Vlada and Semier Insayif (Austria).
"In a time of arms, the voice of poetry" is the theme of the debate which aims to investigate the power of writers to become authentic civic voices, as well as the role of literature in the new cultural-political framework, its power to cross borders, be they geographical or linguistic. The moderator of the meeting, which will take place at the ICR Vienna, is Mihaela Dedeoglu, producer of the popular cultural programme Zebra on RFI Romania.
On 9 November, at 1.30 pm, the German edition of Tatiana ?îbuleac's novel "The Glass Garden", winner of the 2019 European Union Prize for Literature, is scheduled to be launched at the fair. The writer will have a dialogue with Ernest Wichner, the translator of the book and one of the most important promoters of Romanian literature in the German language area.
On the third day of this year's edition of the Vienna International Book Fair, a debate dedicated to translation will take place in the Donau Lounge from 10.15 am on the theme "Connecting the world through translation". Antje Contius (President of the Traduki Foundation), Miruna Vlada (poet, cultural facilitator), Ernest Wichner (translator) will take part in the event.
On the same day, from 15.00, with a continuation at 19.00 in the Donau Lounge at the fair and then at Cafe Wilheim, the debate will take place on the theme "The future of heroes. National poets from the Danube area", with Urska Perenic (historian and literary critic) and Florin Oprescu (professor of literature).
The series of events closes down with a conference delivered by Doina Lemny,reputed specialist in the works of Constantin Brancusi: ‘ Brancusi, closer to Vienna’ – a presentation focusing on the Viennese period in the biography of the artist. Then, there will be a presentation of the Brancusi catalogue ‘ Romanian sources and global perspectives’, coordinator: Doina Lemny (Editura Art Encounters, 2023).
The event, made in partnership with the Association Timisoara 2023 – European Capital City of Culture and Foundation Art Encounters, will take place at the ICR headquarters Vienna, starting at 5 p.m., moderator being Oana Dobosi, cultural manager.
