Romania ranks 48th in Global Innovation Index 2016

Switzerland is the most innovative economy worldwide for the sixth consecutive year, while Romania climbed six positions compared with last year, being ranked 48th out of 128 states included in the Global Innovation Index, according to a report released on Wednesday by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a UN specialized agency.

Even if it advanced six positions compared with 2015, Romania is lagging behind the countries in the region, in the context in which the Czech Republic is ranked 27th, Hungary, 33rd, Slovakia, 36th, and Poland, 39th. Moreover, Bulgaria is ranked 38th, and the Republic of Moldova takes the 46th position.

On a 0 to 100 scale, Romania obtained a 37.9 point score, after the WIPO analysts assessed the innovative performances of the country based on the analysis of 82 indicators such as institutions, political and business environment, regulation framework, education, research and development, human capital and infrastructure.

With a 66.3 point score, Switzerland is ranked first in the Global Innovation Index 2016, followed by Sweden, UK, USA, Finland and Singapore. The least innovative economy in the world is Singapore.

At its ninth edition, the Global Innovation Index is an annual report drawn up by the World Intellectual Property Organization, Cornell University and INSEAD.
