Romania won the first prize for the best European project Natura 2000
Romania won the first prize for the best European project Natura 2000, with the "Tarnava Mare: Promoting the viability of agricultural communities to protect a Natura 2000 landscape" project, reads a release of the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry (MMAP), on Thursday.
Appreciated at a European level as the best project in terms of social-economic benefits it could generate in the protected areas, the "Tarnava Mare: Promoting the viability of agricultural communities to protect a Natura 2000 landscape" project is expected to generate economic growth and sustainable livelihoods in rural areas, while also preserving a unique landscape with rich biodiversity.
"I am happy to say that the Sighisoara-Tarnava Mare area became an example for Romania and Europe. More than 23 per cent of our country's territory is covered by protected natural areas, so that, besides the fact that we are living in one of the most beautiful countries in the European Union, we also enjoy an exceptional biodiversity. And this is something that deserves to be protected and left intact for the future generations. Together with our colleagues in the EU and, especially, with our natural partners - the NGOs, the other colleagues from the ministries, we are trying to adopt those measures that will help us to simultaneously protect the nature and generate sustainable development," said Anne Juganaru, State Secretary with the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry.
The winning project is an achievement of the ADEPT Foundation.
