Romanian Academy hosted a scientific session on the 150th anniversary of King Carol I ascending to Romania's throne

Nobody can write the history of Romania without the Romanian Royal House, since the identities of both are deeply intertwined, Princess Margareta told a scientific session on the 150th anniversary of King Carol I ascending to Romania's throne, hosted by the Auditorium of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest.

In her speech to the participants, Margareta highlighted the past of the royal family in the making of modern Romania, the journey of one and a half century of the Romanian Academy and the royal family, which together are consolidating national identity today.

"Modern Romania is a historic achievement that belongs to us all. It was possible thanks to the sacrifice of millions of Romanians from the past generations who gave their lives to win and consolidate national independence. But nobody can write the history of Romania without the Royal House. The identities of both are deeply intertwined," said Margareta, adding that constitutional monarchy brought stability and continuity in Romania.

She added that "if King Carol I were among us today,'' he would be proud of what has been achieved, he would be happy to see Romania anchored in a stable Europe.

Opening the event, Chairman of the Romanian Academy Ionel-Valentin Vlad said King Carol I was a providential personality for Romania, adding that during his long reign of 48 years Romania witnessed renewal at home and affirmation abroad.

Also addressing the session were honorary Chairman of the History and Archaeological Sciences Department of the Romanian Academy Dan Berindei; Chancellor of the Bucharest University Mircea Dumitru, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, and honorary member of the Romanian Academy Victor Axinciuc.

Also delivering speeches were Roman-Catholic Metropolitan Bishop Ioan Robu and Vicar Patriarch Varlaam Ploiesteanu, who read out a message from Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Christian Orthodox Church.

A message from President Klaus Iohannis was delivered by presidential adviser Sergiu Nistor, in which the part of King Carol I in the construction of Romania's sovereign fate is highlighted, saying about the king that "he goes down in history for his extraordinary achievements, the correspondence between his words and deeds, between political action and the national interest."

Attending the event were member of Romanian and foreign royal houses; Romania's former Presidents Ion Iliescu and Emil Constantinescu; Apostolic Nuncio in Romania Miguel Maury Buendia; Education Minister Adrian Curaj; Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu; other Romanian state officials; members of the Romanian Academy, as well as cultural and scientific personalities.
