Romanian Foreign Minister: Russia sanctions packages work

Sanctions packages for Russia are working, although there are still difficulties, Foreign Minister Lumini?a Odobescu said on Saturday. The head of the Romanian diplomacy attended the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers (Gymnich) in Brussels.

In this context, topics such as the 13th sanctions package for Russia and the issue of a possible "clearer" timetable for the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union were discussed.

"The sanctions packages for Russia are working. Obviously there are still difficulties due to the circumvention of sanctions by certain states and one of the points of discussion today was how we can work better, including with American partners, but also we as member states, to avoid this circumvention of sanctions. We will continue discussions on this, with a special representative dedicated to addressing this issue, and also how to be more effective in terms of the next sanctions, which are related to critical areas, which finance the war industry," said Odobescu.

She said that the situation in Ukraine is still a priority issue on the European agenda.

She added that an agreement is necessary with the European Parliament as regards the implementation of the Facility for Ukraine.

We have been informed that the European Parliament wants to get to an agreement with us as soon as possible, so that the first payment be made in the coming period’ Odobescu said.

As regards the military support for Ukraine, said the minister ‘there are some proposals for compromise and we hope to get to an agreement on this issue as well, in the coming period’.
