Romanians' confidence in the press dropped drastically last year to 35%

The Romanians' confidence into the press dropped drastically last year to 35% from 42% in 2018, representing the biggest annual drop in the world, according to a Reuters study on digital media, presented by Antonia Matei, professor at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication at Bucharest University, presented at a specialized press conference.

“Although 49% of Romanians think the press is a watch dog for democracy and should monitor the rich and powerful, at the same time confidence in the press is very low in Romania.

“Although 49% of Romanians think the press is the watchdog of democracy and should monitor the rich and powerful, at the same time, the confidence in the press is very low. In Romania, compared to the previous year, it dropped by 7% from 42% in 2018 to 35% in 2019. Something happened. Certainly, the sociopolitical, economic of the country, of the moment, has greatly influenced this confidence, was also in the attacks made by  editor's offices against others, the journalists' attacks against others, plus the fake new phenomenon,” Matei said.

At global level, the people's confidence into the press dropped by 2% but the 7% drop in Romania was the most powerful.

According to it, the Reuters study shower that the online environment exceeded television, representing 87% of the market.

“The TV environment is dropping by 4% against 2017. The public prefers online, including social media. Access is by phone, and the usual  computer use is dropping. Social media has 6@%, which means a lot. Facebook remains the main information source, but Youtube, Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger are on the rise,” said Antonia Matei.
