Saveni cheese, 7th Romanian product acknowledged and protected in EU

The European Commission approved on Thursday the inclusion of the Romanian product “Saveni cheese” in the register of products that benefit from the Protected Geographical Indication , an EU press release informs.

 

Saveni cheese is a matured cheese produced in the Botosani area. It has a long maturation period (60 days), which produces a homogeneous consistency and colour. The taste has nutty accents, slightly bitter due to fermentation. Local climate conditions are favorable to the development of natural pastures rich in diverse flora contribute to the quality of milk used for the production of Saveni cheese”, EC points out.

 

This new indication will join the 1,450 products protected at European level, whose list is available based on names and recordings.

 

Romania used to have 6 products recorded by European quality systems, of which five Geographically Protected Indications : Topoloveni plum jam, Sibiu salami, Smoked Novac from Tara Barsei, smoked Danube herring and Plescoi sausages. Ibanesti cheese is recorded in the Protected name category.

 

Documents for four other products have been sent to the European Commission to obtain European protection, four of which for the quality system Protected geographical indication: Sibiu cheese, fish egg salad from Tulcea, Dobrogea pie and Traditional carp fish eggs to obtain Guarantee Traditional Specialty guarantee.

 

About 20 products have been identified for possible European registration: Vaideeni cheese, Bran cheese, Rubarb jam, Gulianca cheese, Delta salad with fish eggs, Hunedoara Vislli, Pecica bread, Ardeal ham, Nadlac salami, Copalau garlic, Pericei onion, Toboliu cabbage, German beer, Muscel pretzels, Samburesti smoked prunes, Oltenia sausages, Voinesti apples.
