Soprano Angela Gheorghiu will receive the European Cultural Award 2015

Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu will receive the European Cultural Award 2015 on the 25th anniversary of the German unification on October 2 in Dresden, the artists' representatives informed on Wednesday. 

The event will also stage other prize winners, such as German tenor Jonas Kaufmann and the Baltic Sea Youth Philharmonic. 

Gheorghiu graduated from the National University of Music Bucharest under the guidance of Professor Mia Barbu. 

Her international debut came in 1992, when she performed on the stage of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme, at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and at the Vienna State Opera. 

Throughout her career spanning over two decades, Gheorghiu has performed on all major world stages, in New York, Philadelphia, London, Paris, Milan, Salzburg, Berlin, Barcelona, Tokyo, Rome, Seoul, Venice, Athens, Monte Carlo, Chicago, Sao Paolo, Los Angeles, Lisbon, Valencia, Palermo, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Zurich, Vienna, Shanghai, etc. 

For her distinguished career Angela Gheorghiu has received several distinctions, including 'La Medaille Vermeille de la Ville de Paris' and has been appointed Officer and subsequently Knight of France's Order of Arts and Letters. 

She has received honorary doctorates from the George Enescu University of Arts of Iasi and from the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy of Cluj-Napoca. In 2010, the soprano was awarded the Order of the Star of Romania, the country's highest civil order awarded by the President of Romania. In 2012, former Romanian King Mihai I conferred on her the Nihil Sine Deo royal decoration for promoting Romanian cultural values abroad.
