Supreme court sends back to DNA case of Madalin Voicu and Nicolae Paun

Judges of the High Court of Justice decided on Tuesday to send back to the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) the case in which Madalin Voiu and Nicolae Paun were sued for having misused European funds intended for social integration of Roma people.

Anti-corruption prosecutors sued MPs Madalin Voicu and Nicolae Paun in early July, together with former head of the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF), Gelu Diaconu, accused together with other people for corruption.

Nicolae Paun is accused by DNA of having used or presented documents or false statements, about the destination of funds obtained from EU budget or budgets administered by it , or in its behalf, embezzlement, money laundering, buying influence, financial operations incompatible with their position or financial transactions meant to obtain money for them or other persons or to favour another company in which they have direct or indirect interests.

The prejudice estimated by prosecutors is 12,384,208.72 lei (10,892,425.43 lei representing European funds and 1,491,783.29 lei from the state budget).

Over 2011-2015, Nicolae Paun, the president of “Pro Europe” Roma Party Association paid fixed monthly amounts of money of 216,502 lei, deputy Madalin Voicu paid wages of 194,241 lei to his wife Carmen Olteanu in projects carried out by the Association. These facilities were offered to Madalin Voicu to intervene next to officers and officials, interventions materialized by validating projects with European financing, in the context of promoting a draft law on the amnesty of the health insurance contribution for certain categories of persons and and the fact that ANAF did not receive taxes from employees within Pro Europe.
