Syrian President pays visit to Romania on Wednesday and Thursday
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad will pay a two-day visit to Romania on Wednesday and Thursday, to answer an invitation extended by his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu, according to a release of the Romanian Presidential Administration.
The Syrian high official's visit to Bucharest comes in the context of the 55th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and also as a response to the visit of the Romanian head of state to Damascus, in October 2008.
On the occasion of this visit, President Bashar Al-Assad will have official talks with the Romanian head of state Traian Basescu, with Prime Minister Emil Boc and also with Speakers of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies.
During the high level talks, there will be approached such issues related to the bilateral agenda as well as specific topics related to the Middle East, said the Presidential Administration.
According to the agenda of the Syrian official, the leader in Damascus will be accompanied in Romania by a delegation made up of the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Walid al-Moallem, presidential adviser on politics and media, Bouthaina Shaaban, and Minister of Economy and Trade, Lamia Assi.

On August 9, 1955, Romania and the Syrian Arab Republic have established diplomatic ties at legation level. On August 24, 1969, there took place a break in diplomatic relations, which were resumed on October 19, 1972.
In the context of development of the political relation between the two countries, there took place a series of bilateral contacts, concretized in high level and parliamentary visits and also mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
President Traian Basescu paid an official visit to Syria on October 20-21, 2008, at the invitation of his Syrian counterpart Bashar Al-Assad. The talks between the two high officials focused on strengthening and amplification of economic cooperation between Romania and Syria. The head of the Romanian state assured the Syrian side that he had been encouraging Romanian companies to seek opportunities for cooperation with Syrian companies, in such fields as oil, gas, agriculture, telecommunications, information technology, constructions and railway transportation.
On June 30, 2010, trade exchanges between Romania and Syria stood at 79.912 million dollars, out of which 2.921 million dollars were in imports and 76.992 million dollars in exports.
