Ten persons die in fire at ICU section of Piatra Neamt County Hospital
Ten people died following the fire that broke out on Saturday evening at the ICU at the Piatra Neamt County Emergency Hospital, Neamt Inspectorate for Emergency Situations Spokesperson Irina Popa announced.
"Ten people were declared dead, and seven persons are in a critical state, including the on call doctor," Irina Popa told Antena 3 private television broadcaster. She pointed out that ambulances from Iasi, Bacau and Roman came to transport patients.
"Tragic event at the hospital here, in Piatra Neamt, a fire at the SARS-CoV-2 ICU, ten deaths among the patients, a doctor with 40% of the body burnt, 15-20% 4th-degree burns on the members, another three persons from the medical staff with 1st and 2nd degree burns, but on restricted areas, that don't require hospitalisation. At the moment, the burnt doctor, who is conscious at the moment, is being transferred to Iasi, from where he will be taken to Floreasca Hospital, tonight, aboard a sanitary aircraft. The other six patients are transferred to Iasi for SARS-CoV-2 support, treatment," Nelu Tataru said upon exiting the Piatra Neamt County Hospital, where he went to evaluate the situation, following the fire that broke out at the ICU.
Health Minister Nelu Tataru has said on Saturday evening, in Letcani, that the anesthesiologist doctor from Neamt that has been seriously injured while trying to save patients from the fire will be transferred to a hospital in Belgium in the morning.
"The doctor from Piatra Neamt, the anesthesiologist and intensive care doctor Catalin Denciu, will be transferred from the airport tonight from Iasi to Bucharest, at Floreasca Hospital, where he will be evaluated and treated for burns. Tomorrow morning he will go to Belgium, to Reine Astrid Military Hospital, the Burns Clinic. The hospital wasn't receiving patients from the exterior, but we discussed together with the prime minister and they accepted the transfer tomorrow morning," Tataru said.
The minister pointed out that the doctor from the Piatra Neamt Hospital was a faculty colleague and a true professional. "He is a professional. I've known him from the faculty. He does his job, as you have seen this evening, trying to save those patients," Nelu Tataru said.
President Klaus Iohannis voices himself "deeply grieved" by the death of the patients in the ICU of the County Hospital of Piatra Neamt, and sends his condolences to the mourning families.
"The tragedy that took place at the Piatra Neamt County hospital has left the entire country in mourning. I am deeply grieved with the death of the patients in the Intensive Care Unit and I am sending my condolences and a lot of strength to the families during these hard moments. I wish fast recovery to the victims who are in a very serious state! I am by the side of all those affected by this terrible accident," Iohannis wrote on Facebook on Saturday evening.
