The presidential adviser Bogdan Aurescu: the visit of president Klaus Iohannis to Ukraine was postponed not annuled
The presidential adviser Bogdan Aurescu stated on Friday that president Klaus Iohannis did not annul his visit to Ukraine he postponed it, stating that he discussed with Poroshenko who said that he would keep in mind the advice from the Venice Commission with regard to the law of education.
(…) ‘ the president of Romania took the decision to postpone the visit. It is not about annulment, it is about a postponement until the problem is solved. (…). We have continued to have a constant dialogue and quite frequent one in this period with the Ukrainian party on different levels.(…) every time we asked the law to be amended in the sense not to affect the rights of the Romanian minority’ said the presidential adviser Bogdan Aurescu in an interview offered to MEDIAFAX asked if Klaus Iohannis would go to Ukraine in the near future.
The president of Romania has a phone discussion with the president Poroshenko in which he told him that the visit would take place when the issue generated by the amendment of the law of education would be solved.
‘Recently, the president of Romania had a phone discussion with president Poroshenko where he told him (…) about the discontent of the Romanian party for the way in which the law was adopted, for the fact that the law affects the rights of the Romanian minority as regards the education in the mother-tongue and required the solution of this problem and told president Poroshenko that the visit would take place when the issues would be solved’ Aurescu said.
Bogdan Aurescu said that president Poroshenko promised to take all the measures to solve the problem.
‘He completely understood the preocupations of the Romanian party and mentioned the fact that Ukraine would observe the advice of the Venice Commisssion for article 7 the most problematic one. And we required in our bilateral contacts that Ukraine require a point of view to the Venice Commission’ the presidential adviser said.
Aurescu said that around 7 – 8 December this advice would be issued.
„ ‘We prepaed ourselves for this visit in Ukraine of the president, with two components, one in Kiev where we had to launch the first meeting of the so-called presidential Romanian-Ukrainan commission (…) which would be the first meeting (…) and the second component had to be a joint visit of the two presidents in rhe region Cernauti to discuss with the representatives of the Romanian minority ,of the Romanian community with regards to their rights. That was why the adoption of the law of education of 5 September took us by surprise and distressed us, surprised us unfavourable as there was no rigorous consultation with the representatives of the Romanian community’, Aurescu said.
The presidential adviser said that Romania supports the draft for European integration of Ukraine and the aspiration Ukraine has as regards the European and Euro-Atlantic integration at the right moment’ .
