The Trade Union National Conferation Meridian does not agree with Rosia Montana being included in UNESCO
Getting Rosia Montana included in UNESCO does not mean it will be saved, but the largest resource of gold and silver in Europe will be blocked, resource which should be used for the benefit of the Romanian citizens, states the Trade Union National Conferation Meridian.
The Confederation draws the attention of premier Ludovic Orban, the members of the government and the public authorities with responsibilities in the area of national security that the pressure placed on the government to include Rosia Montana in UNESCO affect the strategic interests of Romania and national security.
The Confederation says that, by implementing the project Rosia Montana, Romania would have become the main producer of gold and silver of the European Union, revitalizing the mining industry- the strategic part of the national economy – ‘ in a period when the price of gold and silver has reached unimaginable levels’.
Due to the non-implementation of the mining project, the investor has brought Romania to court to the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) which is a World Bank arbitration mechanism for resolving disputes that may arise between States and foreign investors.
It was established in 1965 when the Washington Convention of that year entered into force), requiring damages worth 4 billion dollars in case Romania loses the trial.
According to the quoted source, registering Rosia Montana with UNESCO could have endangered the arbitrage and that is why, in the UNESCO session which took place on 2nd July 2018 in Manama, in Bahrain, the Romanian government required the postponement of registering the file Rosia Montana with UNWSCO until the solution to the trial with the investor, and this was approved by the Heritage World Committee.
