Top of most noise polluted towns in Romania:Bucharest is the leader

Bucharest is the leader of the most noise polluted cities in Romania, about 85% of people being affected by the intense noise, say representatives of Enviro Consult company, one of the most important Romanian auditors in the field of sound measurements. Thus about 85% of Bucharest inhabitants arte affected by the noise that exceeds 55 decibels indicated by EU.

Apartment buildings on big boulevards and apartments located at lower floors are most exposed, ENviro Consult shows. The most sound polluted areas in Bucharest are Magheru Blvd with Nottara Theatre as reference point. Then there are Oltenitei area, Ferdinand Blvd., Ghencea Blvd and Pantelimon. “Some of the quietest streets in Bucharest are located behind apartment buildings in Drumul Taberei, Rahova, 1 Mai, Primaverii and Giulesti,” says Bogdan Lazarovici, executive director of Enviro Consult.

At national level, Bucharest is followed by Constanta, where 76% of people are affected, Cluj Napoca (64%), Brasov and Ploiesti, each with 61% of people, Galati (55%) and Timisoara, where v49% of people are affected by noise.

At the opposite pole there is Iasi, with only 16% of people affected by noise. The calculation is based on the ratio between the number of inhabitants in a town exposed to a level of over 55 decibels and the overall number of inhabitants living in that town, multiplied by 100.“At national level, in towns with over 250,000 inhabitants we have about 2.9 million people exposed to noise over the limit foreseen in auditing standards, which means that for more than 60% of people the quality of life is affected by sound pollution,” Lazarovici added.

By mid 2012, 25 towns in Romania with population over 100,000 will have to present noise maps indicating the level of sound pollution to European authorities. A sound map costs between 25,000 euro for a town like Oradea to 1 million euro for Bucharest, Enviro Consult representatives say.Enviro Consult was set up in 2003 and had a business figure of 585,000 euro in 2009, according to data of the Finance Ministry. Its clients include the city halls of Bucharest, Ploiesti, Cluj Napoca, Galati, Craiova, as well as companies like CFR, Dacia Cars and Arctic.
