USR notifies European Commission about the problems at the nursing homes in Voluntari

USR (Save Romania Union) MEP Vlad Botos on Tuesday sent an official letter to two officials of the European Commission, in which he signals the serious situation faced by some institutionalized persons in Romania, in the context of the investigation regarding the horrific conditions discovered at several nursing homes in Voluntari.

The MEP thus sent a letter to European Commissioner for justice in charge of rule of law and consumer protection, and to Vera Jurova, Vice-President of the European Commission for European Values and Transparency, in which he requests the activation of the European Union mechanisms that would ensure the observance for human rights, but also observing the rights of people with disabilities.

"It is unacceptable that such inhumane acts take place in nursing homes that have contracts with the state. Our elderly suffer from an unfair pension system. Now, those who can no longer take care of themselves have to live with the horror that they can end up in a home run by such monsters. We need urgent solutions for monitoring and intervention at the European level in the case of the system of homes for the elderly, as an additional guarantee for the safety of these people," said MEP Vlad Botos, according to a USR press release.
