Healthcare : National IPP survey: Attitude and perceptions regarding pregnancy interruption in Romania and the responsibility of the authorities

From the fourth place among European Union countries at the level of 2010, with an average of 350 – 400 pregnancy interruption per day, Romania faces a serious problem regarding the number of pregnancy interruption with almost 100,000 – 128,000 per year. The fact that 84% of the fertile women, participating in the most recent survey made by the Institute for Public Policy, IPP through its specialized division for research on site, consider that the state should get more involved in preventing unwanted pregnancy, shows how little responsibility the women assume on the basis of insufficient education with regards to family planning and the health of reproduction in Romania. A worrying percentage of 49% of the fertile women in Romania state in 2012 that they did not benefit from any form of sex education.

The research launched by IPP, financed with the help of Merck Sharp &Dohme (MSD) Romania took place between 28 February – 10 March 2012 through IPP DATA RESEARCH, the research division and market studies of the IPP in Bucharest on a sample of women between 18 – 49 with an error of +/- 3%.

The women in the research, representative at national level have a low level of sex education and know very little about the effects of using contraception methods. Instead of assuming responsibility by accessing more information, they expect the state to do more. 46% of the interviewees say they would not be worried if they get pregnant. 36% of the women state they had at least one abortion and according to the answers offered, one woman out of four aged over 33 had at least one abortion ( the number of women – 18 – 32 – with abortion is dropping against the previous years).

What is worrying is the percentage of 47% of those who say they had a medical check up not even once a year. Although the majority ( 67%) say they know enough about the contraception methods but they don’t use them ( 48% don’t use condom, 56% don’t use pills) a percentage of 52% of those who did not use contraceptive methods state they heard about negative reactions of the pills.

The fact that the women have no knowledge in this domain and don’t have an opinion based on a minimum level of information comes from the percentage of those who consider that using contraceptive methods did not have any effect on the couple’s life ( 50%) or improved it ( 47%).
