Tourism: Event industry generated 70-80% of hotel incomes in Bucharest
ncomes in Bucharest, according to Radu Cimponeriu, MICE expert. “Romania is not yet seen as destination for the event industry. It is an opportunity to which we should allocate more resources. At European level a participant spent on the average 1,620 euro per event, which means about 437 euro/delegate/daily, compared to a tourist who spends 150 euro/day on the average. In Romania, the participant in an event spends less, about 250 euro/day,” Cimponeriu said.
“The event industry is an important business but, unfortunately, Romania lacks a few important things to be really present in this market. Firstly we need a big conference hall seating 3,000-4,000 people in a plenum event, doubled by 12-14 halls for section events. Such an investment can be made only by a public-private partnership, or with European funds, but only following a market analysis for a proper location,” he added.
In point of hotel infrastructure, Romania had the chance to generate important incomes in the event industry, the number of 4 and 5 star hotels being larger than that of 2 and 3 star hotels.“Romania ranks 26th out of 35 European countries in point of organizing international events, while Serbia is 24th. Bucharest ranks 51st of 178 European cities organizing events,” saud Jamil Benabdallah, the representative of the Association of Professionals in Events Industry in Romania.
Sibiu, Cluj, Timisoara, Arad and Iasi are some of the towns mentioned by MICE with potential to become destinations for the event industry.
