Tourism: WTTC foresees higher profits in Romania this year
In 2017, Romania made investments of 15.3 billion lei in tourism, the equivalent of 8% of overall investments in the country, ranking 38th in the world, before Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Bulgaria or Slovakia, according to centralized data of World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
In 2018, a slight increase of investments in tourism are estimated, up to 8.1% of overall investments in the country. This increase will bring profits, 6.6% higher than last year.
WTTC presents the prospects of growing number of visitors in Romania (up to 9.5 million persons) until 2028, as well as growing investments in tourism beyond the threshold of 20 billion lei, representing 8.3% of overall investments. Profit will grow up to 20.4 billion lei in the same period of time.
The threshold of 20 billion lei invested in tourism was exceeded only in 2008, with a share of 7.4% of total investments at national level, that is 9% less than estimated until 2028.
As for direct expenses, 61.9% came from recreation tourism in 2017, the equivalent of 17.2 billion lei. The rest of 38.1% of direct expenses is associated with business travel and amounted to 10.6 billion lei.
In 2018, a 7.8% increase is estimated for recreation tourism, up to 18.5 billion lei. By 2028 expenses will grow to 2.3%, up to 23.3 billion lei.
Expenses resulting from business visits will be similar with those of 2017, that is about 10.6 billion lei, growing by 2.3% to 13.4 billion lei by 2028.
On the overall, expenses will reach 29.1 billion lei this year, while in 2028 it will reach 36.7 billion lei, WTTC estimates show.
