Mihnea Constantinescu: Romania is a black hole full of resources of gas: we have to invest billions of euro in networks
The gas networks of Romania were made for pressure two times lower than the countries around, so that investments of billions of euros are necessary to modify the system, money which will reflect in the bills of end users, stated on Thursday Mihnea Constantinescu, ambassador for energy issues in a conference about the domain under discussion.
‘We don’t have to forget about the situation inherited in the Romanian gas system. Every time when we talk, including with our partners in the EU we have to remind them that Romania, from the point of view of the system is a black hole, we are a black hole full of gas resources. We have a system made for pressures almost half of the pressure of all the countries around us. Anybody with a clear thinking should understand that, in order to upgrade such a system, there are necessary billion of euros for investments, to be reflected in the final bills’ Constantinescu said.
He also said that the BRUA project is under discussion, which is ‘ impressive and a very pleasant surprise’.
‘We hope at somewhere around 2021 Romania could find itself at the crossroads of the three corridors for the transport of natural gas: the vertical one, the south one and the North-South one, from the Baltic Sea to the south part of the continent. In the days to come, there will be the signing, at the level of the company of a memorandum of agreement between Bulgartransgaz, DESFA, FGSZ, Transgaz ( the transporters of gas in Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary and Romania respectively ) and the company which manages the interconnector Bulgaria – Greece for cooperation in the operation of the vertical corridor, so that the interconnection of the systems in Greece and Romania and Hungary could be made’ the diplomat said.
According to him, we are still due with the strategy regarding gas storage, in the new context regarding the future corridors of gas transport.. Romania, increasing its storage capacity, could have a regional role in balancing the systems, Constantinescu added.
